A Different Kind of Masculine Power
How do you show up like a king for your people?
Most men are stuck walking a tightrope between being a pushover and being aggressive. Here's how to find solid ground.
How do you show up like a king for your people.. commanding without demanding.. while still honouring their freedom to choose?
That's the question I keep coming back to. For myself, and for nearly every man I work with.
Let me start with why it's so hard.
The impossible position
Most men are trying to walk a fine line between being pushed over and being aggressive.
And that sweet spot? It can feel almost impossible to find.
To understand why, we have to zoom out.
Up until about 50 years ago, men held most of the power in society. And a lot of them abused it. That's not controversial.. it's history. The structures men built too often served men at the expense of everyone else.
Since then, we've been living through a necessary correction. But here's what happened to a lot of individual men caught in that wave: they became sheepish. Apologetic. Quietly trying to atone for the sins of the men who came before them.
And in that sheepishness, many of them got steamrolled. They gave away not just their unearned power, but their healthy power too. Their spine. Their direction. Their ability to lead.
So now men feel stuck in an impossible bind:
Be a weak man.. passive, uncertain, endlessly deferential.
Or be an aggressive man.. domineering, reactive, a throwback to exactly what we're trying to move past.
Neither of those is the answer. And most men know it. They just haven't been shown the middle path.
The storm is real
Because here's the thing.. life is a storm sometimes.
Work is relentless. Kids need everything. Marriage requires more emotional presence than most men were ever taught to give. Money, health, aging parents, the general weight of being responsible for other people.
The pressure is real. And under pressure, men default to one of the two failure modes. They collapse.. go quiet, withdraw, disappear into work or screens or numbness. Or they explode.. snap at the people they love, control, dominate, react.
Collapse or explode. Pushover or aggressor.
Both come from the same place: a nervous system that's overwhelmed and doesn't know how to hold itself under load.
The middle path
So how do you, as a man, remain calm in the eye of the storm?
Not by suppressing the storm. Not by pretending you're fine. And not by white-knuckling your way through with willpower.
You do it by building the internal CAPACITY to stay grounded when everything around you is chaos.
That word matters. Capacity. Not technique. Not a trick you perform in the moment. An actual, expanded, built-up ability to hold more.. more pressure, more emotion, more responsibility.. without being knocked off centre.
This is the difference between the two failed versions of masculinity and the real thing.
The weak man has no ground to stand on.. so the storm knocks him over.
The aggressive man fights the storm.. so he becomes part of it.
But the self-led man? He becomes the eye of the storm. The still point everything else can orient around.
That's what it actually means to show up like a king for your people.
Command without demanding
A king doesn't demand respect through force. That's a tyrant.. and everyone can feel the difference.
A king commands respect through presence. Through the felt sense that he's grounded, that he's not going to be knocked off centre by every wave, that his people are safe because he's steady.
Command comes from groundedness. Demand comes from dysregulation.
When you demand, you're actually revealing that you're not in control.. of the situation or yourself. You need people to comply so you can feel okay. That's not strength. That's fear wearing strength's clothing.
But when you're truly grounded, you don't need to demand anything. You set a clear direction, you hold your boundaries, and you lead.. and people follow, not because they're forced to, but because your steadiness makes them feel safe enough to.
There's a nobility in this that most men never get to taste. When you show up this way, leading your people stops being a burden you resent and becomes the most fulfilling thing you do. The king archetype isn't a weight to carry. It's who you get to become.
And still.. freedom
Here's the part that completes the picture, and the part the old model of masculinity could never hold.
A truly powerful man doesn't need to control the people around him.
He can command a room and still give everyone in it their freedom to choose. He can lead his family and still honour his wife as an equal. He can have strong preferences and still let the people he loves have theirs.
Because his sense of safety doesn't depend on everyone else falling in line.
That's the paradox of real masculine power: the more grounded and secure you are, the less you need to control. The strongest men give the most freedom.. because they're not threatened by it.
The weak man can't lead. The aggressive man can't let go. The self-led man does both.
Where this actually comes from
None of this lives in your mindset. You can't affirmation your way into being the eye of the storm.
It lives in your nervous system.
That's the real men's work. Not performing strength. Not suppressing emotion. Building the internal CAPACITY that lets you become the steady centre your people can build their lives around.
That's how you show up like a king.
Not by demanding the crown.
By becoming the kind of man who doesn't need to.
